Bringing a car in from interstate, re-registering something that's been off the road, or getting a modified vehicle back to legal? That needs a blue slip - a more thorough inspection that checks the vehicle's identity as well as its safety. We handle the inspection and walk you through the re-registration paperwork so the whole process is as painless as possible.

When you need a blue slip

A blue slip (an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection) is for vehicles with no current NSW registration. The common cases: rego that has been expired for more than three months, a car bought interstate that you're registering in NSW, a vehicle with no number plates, a repairable write-off that's been authorised for re-registration, and some defect notice clearances. If the vehicle just needs its yearly check to renew an existing NSW rego, that's a pink slip instead, and we do both.

What to bring on the day

Bring photo ID and proof you're entitled to register the vehicle. A sale receipt, previous rego papers or interstate registration documents all work. Make sure we can get to the VIN and engine number, and bring any paperwork for modifications, such as an engineering certificate, if the vehicle has them. The car can arrive on a tow truck or trailer, or you can drive it in under an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Service NSW, as long as the booking is locked in first.

After the inspection

If the vehicle passes, we lodge the blue slip electronically with Transport for NSW. You then finish the registration at Service NSW with your ID and proof of entitlement, pay the rego and sort your plates. Plan that visit for soon after the inspection, since the result is only valid for a limited window. If something fails, you get a clear list of what's needed, and because we're a full workshop we can usually do the repairs and re-inspect under the one roof.

When do I need a blue slip instead of a pink slip?

A blue slip is for unregistered vehicles - rego lapsed more than 3 months, interstate transfers to NSW, imports, or vehicles with defect notices requiring a full inspection. A pink slip is just the annual safety check for renewing existing NSW rego.

How do I get an unregistered car to your workshop?

You can drive an unregistered vehicle directly to a booked inspection using an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Service NSW, or tow/trailer it in. Give us a call first so the booking is in place - that matters for the permit.

What does a blue slip check that a pink slip doesn't?

On top of the safety inspection, a blue slip verifies the vehicle's identity - VIN, engine number, compliance plates - and checks that any modifications are within the rules. It's a longer, more thorough inspection.

How long does a blue slip take?

Allow around an hour for the inspection itself. If the vehicle passes, we lodge the result electronically and you can complete registration through Service NSW.

Can you do a blue slip on a modified vehicle?

Yes, if the modifications are within the NSW light vehicle rules. Bigger changes, like engine conversions or significant lifts, may need sign-off from a licensed certifier before the blue slip can pass. Tell us what's been done when you book and we'll let you know upfront exactly what it needs.
